Baby formula market is changing by leaps and bounds in the region. It is a constantly growing business on which mega companies have had their eyes over the last few years.

The American company Mead Johnson took the big step forward when it signed an agreement with the Argentine SanCor a year and a half ago. See article.

And a new piece of news shook the segment in 2012: The Swiss Nestlé announced its interest in acquiring Pfizer’s baby formula unit.

However, it took a step backward in Latin America and decided to sell this unit to the South African Aspen.

What is ASPEN? It is the same company that took charge of the Geniol painkiller line this year after a global agreement reached with the British GSK. See article.

Although this agreement includes all countries in the region from Mexico to the south, it excludes ArgentinaSee article.

So—as this operation is under way—Pfizer brands are somehow “in limbo”. Nevertheless, the brand S-26 that used to belong to Pfizer maintains an insignificant share of the market and is still marketed by Nestlé in Argentina.

When Pharmabiz asked about this issue, Nestlé refused to answer through its spokesperson, María Paula Álvarez.

Meanwhile, European Danone operates with its division Baby Nutrition in the corporate offices located next to Intercontinental Hotel. This division includes Nutricia formulas, which were acquired in 2007.
